Objective To study the effect of Otago exercise on fall performance, balance ability, self-care ability and fall occurrence in elderly stroke patients after discharge. Methods A total of 80 discharged patients from the Department of Neurology of our hospital from 2018.7.1 to 2020.6.30 who met the research standards were randomly divided into observation group and control group, with 40 cases in each group. Both groups were treated with routine fall prevention measures during the hospitalization period and were discharged After that, routine phone calls, WeChat and outpatient follow-ups were performed. The observation group received 6 months of Otago Exercise (OEP) intervention on the basis of the control group. The two groups of patients were compared before and after the intervention in fall performance, balance ability, self-care ability and fall occurrence, and evaluated the effect of Otago exercise in preventing falls in elderly stroke patients after discharge. Results Before the intervention, there was no difference between the two groups of patients in fall efficacy, balance ability, Barthel's self-care ability score, and fall incidence (P>0.05). After 6 months of intervention, the observation group and the control group had no difference The Barthel self-care ability score was improved compared with that before the intervention (P<0.05), and the improvement in the observation group was more obvious (P<0.05), but there was no significant difference in the incidence of falls (P>0.05). Conclusion Six months of Otago exercise intervention can improve the fall performance, balance ability and self-care ability of elderly stroke patients after discharge from the hospital, but whether it can reduce the incidence of falls remains to be further studied.
